ISO 14001-2015

What is ISO 14001-2015?

ISO 14001 (current version from September 2015) is intended for organisations of all sizes and in a wide range of industries wishing to improve their environmental performance.

Principle and requirement of the standard

With this updated version, the notion of improving environmental performance is reinforced: a pillar of sustainable development. This required responsibility is one of the building blocks of a global CSR policy.

The ISO 14001-2015 compliant environmental management system is part of the company's strategy of continuous, viable and effective development in line with environmental impacts (activities, products and services). Its implementation enables the company to comply with environmental regulations.

The standard ISO 14001 establishes provisions for the improvement of practices and strategies on the environmental aspects of an organisation, through the fulfilment of compliance obligations and the achievement of environmental objectives.

In practice, this responsibility contributes to the control of energy consumption, pollution and waste, management of water resources and wastewater.

The main points of the ISO 14001-2015 EMS include the following:

  • fostering anticipation of opportunities and risks;
  • strengthen links with stakeholders;
  • developing long-term strategic planning in consideration of the environmental policy;
  • facilitating integration with an existing system (e.g. ISO 9001)

Benefits for an organisation

The organisation that opts for a sustainable and efficient EMS management system reduces certain costs: zero waste to landfill, raw materials and energy management. In addition to economic performance, the company optimises its image by reducing its carbon footprint. This image of a committed and responsible company is increasingly taken into consideration in calls for tender.
